Soktoberfest 2006 20th Annual Soktoberfest Draws 65 teams
“It was a record breaking year for our 20th anniversary of Soktoberfest,” said Brian Vierthaler, tournament director. “We had 65 teams in the tournament with 8 brackets of play and with the exception of late Saturday afternoon, we had great fall weather.” In 1986, Northeast Oklahoma Adult Soccer Association began the annual event with games played at the same site as the Tulsa Oktoberfest. Within a few years, the tournament outgrew the share site and moved to a variety of locations around Tulsa. According to Vierthaler, “NEOASA wants to host the most competitive, elite adult soccer tournament in the country in a festival atmosphere and in a manner rewarding to all participants.” With the increase in teams, another site was added, according to Shae Roggendorff, NEOASA officer. The Central Tulsa Soccer Club and Thunder Soccer Club provided 5 fields at their PSO West Bank Complex in addition to the Torchia Oliver Complex in Jenks. With 13 large fields and many of them lighted, the event began with 8 games under the lights on Friday, October 20. The 8 divisions included Men’s Super Group, Men’s Competitive, Women’s Competitive, Men’s Over 30 Competitive, Men’s Recreational, Women’s Recreational, Men’s Over 30 Recreational, Men’s Masters (over 35). Vierthaler pointed out that the preliminary matches were all 30-minute halves and the finals were the only games played to 45-minute halves. Another feature added this year was adjusting the point system to include two points deducted for each yellow card and three points deducted for each red card. Plans are already underway to make Soktoberfest 21, another record-breaking tournament.
