How to Become a Referee

Your journey to become a licensed US Soccer Referee begins here.

You’ll start at home completing online compliance assignments (background check, SafeSport, etc), then move on to the online learning modules, and finish with an in-person session at the location you have chosen.

You must be 13 years old to referee. Start this process early as the compliance assignments and online modules must be completed before your in-person session.

  1. Visit the US Soccer Learning Center
    Create your User Profile HERE.
  2. Sign-Up for a First-time Referee Course
Choose the course you want to attend. REGISTER for the course and complete the BACKGROUND CHECK & SAFESPORT TRAINING.
  3. Complete Online Components & Referee Quiz
Progress through the modules at your own pace and take the Quiz at the end of the Course.
  4. Attend your In-Person Field Session
Show up early and ready to learn. Bring a whistle and assistant referee flags. Once completed, the Oklahoma State Referee Committee will complete your certification.
  5. Purchase Uniform
Uniform options can be found by visiting Official Sports or Score Sports. Start with a Starter Kit, or the bare minimum. (Yellow Shirt, Shorts, and socks).
  6. Find the Club where you want to Referee
Contact the Soccer Club’s Referee Assignor. You can find this info on the Soccer Club’s webpage. This LINK may also help.
  7. Referee your first match!
You’ve done it! Congratulations and enjoy the ride!
